Item Description
Mid-20th century 井戸茶碗 Ido chawan for Japanese tea ceremony (Sadō/Chadō). Ido style teabowls are distinct in that they aim to reproduce the look and aesthetic of Korean teabowls, prized and popularized by tea masters during the 1500s.
This Ido chawan has a beautiful shape and fantastic glaze, with a variety of colors ranging from light grey, blue, purple, and pink. The foot (高台 kōdai) of this teabowl is slightly taller than what is typical of most teabowls, and has a lovely accumulation of glaze, creating a unique texture. Within the interior of the bowl there are ten spots of exposed clay, indicating where another teabowl had been stacked against this bowl during the firing process. These marks are also characteristic of Ido chawan.
As a used, vintage item, there is some cracking of the glaze and one hairline crack. This is typical of a bowl this age (50-80 years old). It is a fantastic teabowl, a joy to use, and will make a great addition to any collection.
